The study was not designed to determine why psychopathic individuals with especially high antisocial traits limited their head movements. The unique ways psychopaths communicate nonverbally could offer clues into the neurological underpinnings of the condition and improve how clinicians identify psychopaths. When combined with gaze, the researchers noted, head movement can express even more complex functions, like degree of emotion, social control, and regulation of conversation sequencing (e.g., whose turn it is to talk). For example, past research on interpersonal communication has found that head movement and direction can help convey agreement, dissent, and confusion, while doing things like shaking your head or nodding can help emphasize a point. So, why study head movement at all? The researchers noted that nonverbal behaviors play a crucial role in communication. But the researchers indicated that facet 4 also accounts for developmental traits, and that it is important to recognize “the developmental nature of antisocial pathology and how this is relevant to the subtle interpersonal cues quantified by the current methods.” Identifying atypical nonverbal communication After all, it might seem like head movement during communication is a behavior that would be associated with the interpersonal traits of psychopathy, like pathological lying or manipulation. This result was a bit counterintuitive, the researchers noted. But while the correlation between psychopathy and stationary head movements was statistically significant and robust, it was only observed for one aspect - called facet 4 on the PCL-R - of psychopathy: developmental and antisocial traits, which include aggression, impulsiveness, and criminal behavior. (16) Chelsea's training ground at Harlington in west London is a bleak, soulless place. The results showed that inmates who scored high in psychopathy were more likely to hold their heads still during the interviews. (15) The ground is lined on two sides by soulless, multi-lane roads, on another by a building site and on the fourth by five-storey public housing. (14) What's left of the city appears nondescript and soulless, without any apparent centre or focal point. (12) He's hanging around the writers to get a job, hoping for a better-paid class of soulless and demeaning media work. (9) I watch these things from above, sitting on my lofty treetop, observing this human suffering with my beady, soulless, black eyes. (8) It organised immigrant workers in the unorganised car plants and engineering firms and gave them a sense of community in the soulless neighbourhoods in which they lived. (7) His work here, which is technically competent but soulless and uninspired, is unlikely to elevate him onto anyone's A-list. (6) The higher purpose of art is evidently to correct the spiritual errors of a soulless, competitive, materialist society. (5) Tarkovsky no doubt saw himself pursuing the spiritual in human existence against the soulless, corrupt and morally bankrupt Stalinist leadership. (4) Even a fairly pathetic human being is better than being a soulless android. (3) It's time to drift back into the soulless monotony of a five-day work week and inch closer and closer to death. (2) I remember his soulless eyes boring into mine in resentment, the detachedness of his touch, his monotonous voice. (1) Plenty of people who felt trapped inside that world promised themselves that they would never end up in such a soulless setting - and that they would certainly never make their own kids live there.
