Video of an early prototype of the Aero-X can be seen here. Musk recently told podcast titan Joe Rogan that he wants the second-generation Roadster to hoverwithout, you know, killing people. The Aero-X seats two people and can hover up to 12 feet above the ground at speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. Like most devices trying to do two different tasks, it’s never as good at either task as a device specifically designed for the task. He recently shared his concepts on Instagram, that show how hes taken off the vehicles axles and wheels to create a maglev-powered hovering car one that. California-based firm Aerofex is developing a hover vehicle called the Aero-X that has been compared to the speeder bikes seen in the Star Wars films. Of course, two drivetrains are needed, so that adds extra weight. Aircraft engines generally need two independent ignition systems and the ability to switch between them. I wonder if it would have to meet the various automotive safety requirements too? Even the engines have different requirements. I’ve heard that aircraft wheels don’t withstand the abuse of regular roads, so the wheels and suspension need to be heavier. The hubcaps then become thrust-capable engines, propelling the vehicle upwards. Re: design compromises… there’s no question that the craft will be heavier than an equivalent airplane. This is a sci-fi trope in which a wheeled vehicle of some kind is capable of flying or hovering by simply rotating the wheels 90 degrees, usually up and into the vehicle in question. Doing this at a small or remote airport is more difficult, so maybe that’s the intended purpose?Ī variety of folding bicycles have been designed for similar reasons… to get to lodging or at least to the next mode of transportation. The Hover Car is a two-seater zero emissions vehicle that hovers above ground and travels along electromagnetic road networks. For private pilots, the need to find automotive transportation at the destination is typical. Re: the intended market… I’m not sure I understand who would be buying these either.
